What is telc Deutsch B1 or Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD)?

telc Deutsch B1 or Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) is an exam for people who already have basic knowledge of German and who are either interested in further studies or starting vocational training.

What knowledge do I have at telc Deutsch B1 level?

At the level of Deutsch B1 you can communicate in all important situations. When clear standard language is used and when the conversation is about familiar topics such as work, school or free time, you can understand the main content and you can talk in a simple but coherent way. When travelling in German speaking countries you can understand most everyday situations without difficulties. In your everyday life you can talk effortlessly about familiar topics and personal interests. You can describe different experiences, your dreams, hopes and goals and give short explanations. At the level telc Deutsch B1 you use the most important grammatical structures correctly. But don’t worry, mistakes are still allowed! You don’t have to be perfect yet.

Would you like to apply for German citizenship or start vocational training?

Before being allowed to become a German citizen or before starting certain vocational training, it is necessary to have a sufficient knowledge of German. The certificate telc Deutsch B1 serves as proof. The certificate is accepted in Germany and also in many public institutions abroad.

How much does the telc Deutsch B1 exam cost?

A summary of the price for the exam can be found here. Please make sure to register at least 30 days prior to the exam. When registering less than 30 days before the exam, a late registration fee of 30€ applies.

When can I take the exam?

speakeasy usually offers telc exams in the second and fourth course week, always on a Friday. You can take the oral as well as the written part of the exam on the same day. The results are usually available after approx. six weeks. Please check out our summary of the exact dates and prices here.

What is the structure of the exam?

The exam consists of two parts – a written part and an oral part. The written exam focusses on reading, listening comprehension and writing. It takes two hours and 30 minutes. In the oral exam, your speaking abilities are assessed, and you can take this part of the exam on the same day as the written part or on another day. Before your oral exam starts, you will have 20 minutes to prepare.
